1. When first coined, a a term of endearment for a young girl . Girlie went through a process of pejoration referring to, in succession, a woman friend, a loose-woman and, in the 20 ^th century, a scantily dressed young woman featured in pornographic (girlie) magazines and nude-bars. The term was made popular with reference to pinups such as Betty Grable.
