In sadomasochism, to lie on a bed of nails for sensory enhancement or to create intense sensations that may evolve into an altered state of consciousness. The Bed of Nails was adopted by some American S & M communities as a form of stress purgative to direct the users attention to the body and its sensations and to block out the emotional pressures from the rest of the day.
