gonorrhea:
Also known as: Neisseria gonorrhea , a sexually-transmitted-disease (STD) caused by a kidney-shaped bacterium called Neisseria-gonorrheae . Gonorrhea is almost always passed through unprotected anal, vaginal, or oral-sex . Babies can get gonorrhea in their eyes at birth if their mother is infected . SYMPTOMS: Symptoms develop from 2-30 days after infection. IN MEN: A yellowish discharge from the penis , burning/itching around tip of penis , painful and frequent urination . +/- 20% of infected men show no symptoms. In later stages, the infection may move into the prostate , seminal vesicles, and epididymis. Untreated, gonorrhea can lead to sterility. IN WOMEN: +/- 50% of women show no symptoms or symptoms so mild they are ignored. Early symptoms include increased vaginal-discharge , irritation of the external genitals , pain or burning on urination and abnormal-bleeding between periods. If untreated, the infection will usually spread to the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries causing pelvic-inflammatory-disease (PID). TREATMENT: Standard antibiotics, usually a member of the penicillin family . SYNONYMS:
